The Abyssinian minister Malik Ambar.
Deccan, c.1650.
Presented by Mildred and W.G. Archer, 29 January 1971.
Drawing.
222 by 140 mm.
Reverse: a 17th-century Mughal sketch of a nobleman and his lady.
The minister stands facing right, his face in profile, holding a long sword, and wearing a small Deccani turban and long patterned ‘patka.’
‘Note:’ This drawing was formerly in the collection of P.C. Manuk and Miss G.M. Coles of Patna, Bihar, and formed part of the residuary collection sold April 1949.
Malik Ambar (c.1549-1626) was an Abyssinian by birth who was taken to India as a slave. He rose to great power in the service of the rulers of Ahmadnagar, providing aggressive opposition to the Mughal armies. There are problems attached to the identification of his portraits which are discussed in Khandalavala and Chandra (1955-56B). A related portrait of Malik Ambar is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Coomaraswamy (1930), 48, pl.XXXVII).
