A two storeyed Palladin mansion, probably in Madras. A ‘chaprassi’ with a Maratha-type turban stands at the foot of a flight of steps.
By a Madras artist, c.1835.
Inscribed on back in pencil: ‘Belfort House. Our place of residence;’ on original mount; ‘Cadell Esq.’.
Water-colour; 26 by 42 cm.
Presented by Miss M. Tait, 1974.
Note: The style appears to be influenced by topographical artists such as John and Justinian Gantz who painted houses in Madras. The treatment of the grass and the casuarina trees is reminiscent of Justinian Gantz’s style. See entries under this artist.
