The unveiling of Draupadi.
Delhi, c.1920.
Presented by Michael Archer, 10 March 1974.
Gouache; panel at top containing Persian text from the ‘Razmnama’; yellow and duck-egg blue borders.

A scene from the Mahabharata. A composite picture showing the five Pandava princes on the right gambling with the Kauravas. The eldest Pandava brother, Yudhishthira, is seated opposite Duryodhana beside a ‘pachisi’ board. Yudhishthira loses the match and Draupadi, the common wife of the five Pandava brothers, is handed over, together with Yudhishthira’s kingdom, to the Kauravas. Draupadi becomes a slave and is asked by Duryodhana to sweep the room. When she refuses, she is dragged into a pavilion before all the Kauravas and Duhsashana tears off her veil and dress. A version after an Akbar period illustration to the ‘Razmnama,’ the Persian version of the ‘Mahabharata.’
