Design (aide-mémoire) of lotus circles ‘(kamalban).’ Seven lotus circles, the central one pierced by a ‘bamboo tree’. In the four corners (commencing from the top left) are Siva and Parvati with Nandi, an owl, the bride and bridegroom being carried in a palanquin, the bride and bridegroom with an attendant and a ‘bamboo tree’. Around the sides are suns and moons, parrots, fishes and an elephant.
By a Maithil Kayasth woman from the household of Sripat Mallik, village Simri, p.s. Benipatti, Madhubani subdivision, Darbhanga district, Bihar,. c.1920.
Pen-and-ink and water-colour on paper mounted on cloth; 1010 by 1000 mm.
Presented to W.G. Archer by the household, 1940. Purchased 1974.
