Rama and Sita enthroned, Lakshmana, Jambavat and two attendants beside them. Artist(s): Rupchand Kha (fl. c.1850)
- Scope & Content:
-
A painting illustrating a religious subject.
Rama and Sita enthroned, Laksmana, Hanuman, Jambavat and two attendants beside them.
Variant on, or perhaps a near precursor of Kalighat painting, c.1850.
By Rupchand Kha, Kejata village, Bengal.
Inscribed in Bengali: ‘sri rupcand kha village kejata.’
Gouache; 300 by 255 mm.
Given to W.G. Archer by A.S. Nahar of Dumka, Santal Parganas district, Bihar, 1946.
Note: Side by side with Kalighat painters, there existed in Calcutta and its neighbourhood groups of patuas who were producing small-scale pictures of gods and characters from the Hindu epics. Their paintings had many features in common with those of Kalighat - similar colour, the use of silver and even gold paint ~ but their paintings never developed the simplification, bold outlines and rounded shading which characterised Kalighat painting proper.
