The Tarakesvar murder. To the left, the Mahant, Madhav Giri, sees Elokesi at the Tarakesvar temple; to the right, Nabin murders his wife Elokesi with a fish-knife.

Engraved in Bengali characters: (1) ‘sri madhavgiri mohanta’ (Mahant Madhav Giri); ‘(2) telebo elokesi badina pisi’ (Telebo, Elokeshi, Aunt Badina); (3) ‘elokesi; (4) sri nabina candra vandyopadhyaya’ (the clerk Nabin’s name in full).

Acquired by W.G. Archer on the London market 1965. Purchased 1974.
Note: Telebo was maid servant in Elokesi’s family and procuress for the Mahant of Tarakesvar; Elokesi, wife of the clerk Nabin, was seduced by Madhav Giri, Mahant of the Tarakesvar temple; Badina, aunt of Elokesi, was privy to the intrigue. For an account of the Tarakesvar scandal, see W.G. Archer (1971). In Calcutta society the ‘madame’ of a brothel is also familiarly termed ‘pisi’ ('aunt’).
