Mortuary figure. An old man seated on the ground with vessels beside him, a small nude servant attending.
By a jaduapatua, Burdwan, Bengal, c.1930.
Water-colour; 245 by 284 mm.
Presented to W.G. Archer by Sudhansu Kumar Ray, 1962.
Note: An example of mortuary figures made by jadupatuas in Bengal (i.e. outside the Santal Parganas district). The painting shows a man enjoying earthly comforts in the next world after his sight has been restored by the jadupatua. The act of bestowing sight is called ‘chakshudan.’
For jaduapatua paintings in similar style, see Mookerjee (1939), pls. 24, 25 and (1961), pl.22; also Welch (1973), pl.1, pp.17, 18.
