The gods stand on pipal leaves. Balabhadra, Subadhra and Jagannatha backed by three large pipal leaves stand in angular troughs of waves on a band of black water sprinkled with green leaves and white flowers. In the water two large fishes. Balabhadra and Jagannatha are shown as post-like figures with large round heads and upraised wooden ‘arms’. Madder background. Black borders with greenish yellow hatching.
By a citrakar of Puri, Puri district, Orissa, early-nineteenth century.
Gouache and earth-colours on prepared paper; 230 by 275 mm.
Acquired by W.G. Archer from members of the painter community in a suburb of Puri, December 1933. Purchased 1974.
Note: An extension to Puri iconography of the familar image of the child Krishna, resting on the cosmic waters and sucking his toe.
