The gods meet the milkmaid. A version of Add.Or.3663 but with the following significant details. Balabhadra on a black horse is dressed in green and has a white face, hands and feet. Jagannatha on a white horse has a black face but is otherwise entirely yellow. Balabhadra has wooden ‘arms’ springing like wings from behind his shoulders but Jagannatha lacks them. Each has a round head. Beneath the horses are two large clumps of grass. The milkmaid, Manika, has golden-coloured skin and stands, plump and well-rounded in a dark green sari, facing the oncoming riders. She greets them with folded hands. Madder background. Black borders with yellow hatching, parts of Manika and of Jagannatha’s mount projecting into them.
By a citrakar of Puri, Puri district, Orissa, early-nineteenth century.
Gouache and earth-colours on prepared paper; 230 by 280 mm.
Acquired by W.G. Archer from members of the painter community in a suburb of Puri, December 1933. Purchased 1974.
