- Title:

The Jagannatha trio with human resemblances.
- Scope & Content:
-
The Jagannatha trio with human resemblances as in Add.Or.3702-3, but with greater incongruities. Balabhadra with white feet, black trousers and sleeved coat, stands with arms upraised, human hands at their ends but with wooden ‘arms’ sprouting like wings from behind his shoulders; Jagannatha with round black face stands beside him with yellow feet and hands, green trousers and sleeved coat and with similar human hands and sprouting vestigial wooden ‘arms’. Both wear sashes with flowing ends. Subadhra is pressed between them. No Sudarsana Cakra. Border with yellow hatching.
By a citrakar of Puri, Puri district, Orissa, late-nineteenth century.
Gouache on paper; 260 by 275 mm.
Acquired by W.G. Archer from members of the painter community in a suburb of Puri, December 1933. Purchased 1974.
Note: For the attitude of one hand raised higher than the other, compare the normal stance of Sri Nathji, Nathadwara, Mewar. It is noteworthy that in Nathadwara painting he is also constantly represented with a flared skirt.
