The Jagannatha trio depicted in gay bright colours against a red background within a shallow shrine. Yellow wing-like ‘arms’. Below a broad panel containing the Garuda pillar (Aruna Stambha), on the left, a pair of leogryphs, between them the untouchables’ image of Jagannatha and on the right part of the temple bathingtank or pool. To the left of the shrine, the temple cookhouse and two minor shrines and to the right, Madana Mohana in a boat, and two lingam shrines. At the top, the ten incarnations of Visnu.
By a citrakar of Puri, Puri district, Orissa, c.1920-30.
Gouache on prepared cloth; 370 by 290 mm.
Acquired by W.G. Archer from a stall adjoining the Puri temple, December 1933. Purchased 1974.
