A lady with a peacock
- Scope & Content:
-
A lady with a peacock.
Hyderabad, c.1810.
Purchased June 1976.
Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with brown border.
184 by 115 mm; page 232 by 165 mm.
Reverse: a page of text from a manuscript of Persian poetry; 18th century.
A lady stretches her arms above her head as she stands on a terrace beneath a tree looking at a peacock which is beside her. A girl is on the right playing a ‘tambur.’
‘Note:’ This is probably an illustration from a ‘ragamala’ series, but although the subject approximates to ‘Sohni Ragini’ and ‘Kakubha Ragini’ the erratic iconography of eighteenth-century Deccani’ ragamalas’ of this type does not allow the certain identification of single pictures detached from their series. For discussion of such series, ‘see’ Ebeling (1973), 100-106 and 197.
This variant of the Hyderabad style has been associated with Shorapur (Kramrisch (1937), 183 and 227). Later researches on the matter by Mittal (1963), Prof. Formijne, and Binney (1973), no.173, have provided no conclusive confirmation of the attribution.
