Shah Jahan in durbar
- Scope & Content:
-
Shah Jahan in durbar.
Mughal, c.1650.
Circumstances of acquisition unrecorded.
Inscribed on reverse in Persian: ‘tasvir-i shah Jahan’ (a picture of Shah Jahan).
Gouache with gold.
305 by 220 mm.
Reproduced: Losty (1986), 33.
Listed: Foster (1906), no.66; Foster (1924), no.71.
Shah Jahan, facing left, is seated holding a ruby in his right hand; ‘chauri’-bearers stand on either side of him and behind, and an attendant before him holds a tray of jewels. Officers and standard-bearers stand in a group on the right, and on the left is prince ‘Alamgir (Aurangzeb) who salutes his father. The location is probably the Diwan-i-Am at Delhi.
Note: Other durbar scenes of this type are in the manuscript of the ‘Shah Jahannama’ in the collection of Her Majesty the Queen, Windsor Castle. The painting is first listed in the 1906 edition of Foster suggesting that it was acquired sometime between then and 1902, the date of the preceding edition. Few miniatures seem to have been acquired by the Library between 1816 and 1902 when T.W. Arnold joined the staff.
