Full-length portrait of Nawab Shuja‘ al-Daula of Oudh (1754-75) wearing a fur-trimmed turban and surcoat and leaning on a sword. He has a blue halo.
By Din Dayal, a Lucknow artist, c.1830.
Inscribed on back: ‘Newaub Shoojah Ood Dowlah of Oude. Drawn by Deen Dial of Lucknow and given to Major Herring 6th August 1841 by Kishan Dhyal.’
Gouache; 285 by 210 mm.
Presented by Mr. Toby Falk, 1978.
Note: Kishan Dayal may well have been the son of the artist Din Dayal. The painting would appear to be one of the stock portraits produced in Lucknow which were based on earlier oils by the British artist, Tilly Kettle. Major Edmund Herring of the 57th N.I. was posted to Lucknow in 1841.
