Note: From a large album of drawings depicting butterflies. From the late eighteenth century onwards Trichinopoly artists were making sets of natural history drawings for the British. See Giles Eyre, ‘Catalogue 24, Indian Painting for the British 1770-1880’, nos.52-62 and 63-75, recording a set of water-colours of plants commissioned by William Jackson in 1785-6 and a set of birds and animals commissioned by William E. Gibb in March 1839.
