Fish seller, sweetmeat maker and sweetmeat seller. Artist(s): Shiva Dayal Lal (c.1820-c.1880)
- Scope & Content:
-
Fish seller, sweetmeat maker and sweetmeat seller.
Probably by Siva Dayal Lal (c.1820-c.1880, a Patna painter, c.1880.
Gouache: 210 by 334 mm, with mount 266 by 40 mm).
From the collection of Mildred and W.G. Archer. Purchased 1978.
Note: This painting was part of a group purchased in Patna by the Indian collector, P.C. Manuk. It was purchased by W.G. Archer at Christie’s April 1949 from the Manuk Residuary Collection. Two other paintings from the same group depicted a milkman, potter and toy-maker (now British Museum) and a grain and vegetable seller (Victoria and Albert Museum, I.S.66-1949, reproduced S.C.Welch, ‘Room for Wonder’ (New York, 1978, pl.30). Siva Dayal Lal, unlike his brother, Siva Lal, preserved a far more ‘Indian’ style. See M Archer, ‘Patna Painting’ (1947), 29, and Mildred and W.G. Archer, ‘Indian Painting for the British’ (Oxford, 1955), 39, 40, when it was suggested that the painting was by Jamuna Prasad (1859-84) who was employed in Siva Dayal Lal’s workshop. It now seems more likely, however, that the present picture is the work of Siva Dayal Lal himself.
