The so-called Tumkum house outside Madurai
- Scope & Content:
-
The so-called Tumkum house outside Madurai.
Inscribed on the back in pencil: ‘Madura, A.W. Phillips, 1858; 6.’.
By a Madurai artist, 1858.
Water-colour on paper; 204 by 252 mm.
Transferred from the National Army Museum, 1980.
Note: The drawing belonged to Alexander William Phillips, Madras Civil Service 1840-1869. From 1854-1859 he was in Madurai, first as Acting Sub-Judge, and from 1855 the Acting Civil and Sessions Judge. The Tumkum, or Tamakam, a mile or so north-east of the city, is a pleasure-house built apparently by Tirumala Nayak in the mid-17th century; its main room is in the style of the Madurai palace.
