A page with two drawings of different parts of Hindu temples: the upper, the interior of a dome raised on four columns with chain and bell hanging from its crown; the lower, a long exterior wall, into which three doors give access, two of them revealing rows of columns.
By a Calcutta artist, c.1780-85.
Inscribed in Persian: (above the cupola) ‘andarun-i sabha mandap’; (below the right doorway) ‘in darvaza-i huzad’; (below the central doorway) ‘bar rah-i darvaza-i annapurna birun’ (Inside the assembly hall; this is the door at the side(?); the way to the door of Annapurna from outside.).
Pen-and-ink and wash; 327 by 415 mm.
Provenance: Warren Hastings and thence by descent. Purchased 1986.
Note: The date seems fixed by its provenance from the Hastings collection, but it does seem very early for this type of work.
