The Asar Mahal in Bijapur, viewed from across the great tank to its east.
By a western Indian artist, early 19th century.
Inscribed below in ink: ‘Mihrza Shureef’; and on the back in pencil in a different hand: ‘Where Mahomed’s remains were laid.’.
Pen-and-ink and water-colour; 215 by 314 mm.
Note: Previously WD3523. The Asar Mahal was first built as a court of justice, but converted to house relics of the Prophet Muhammad when their earlier home was destroyed. This and Add.Or.4246 both come from a group of water-colours and drawings formerly belonging to S.B. Haines of the Bombay Marine, and Political Agent and virtual Governor of Aden 1839-54. See WD3472-3527.
