Portrait of the Begum Samru, half length facing slightly to the right and holding the snake of a hookah. She wears a fur hat, with dangling pearl ‘sarpech’ and a pearl necklace, and is enveloped in a heavy yellow shawl, with red and blue lining. The background is uniformly dark grey.
By a Delhi artist, 1812.
Inscribed in ink on a paper oval over back of miniature: ‘Her Highness the Begume Sombre Zebool Nissa 67 years 1812.’ Inscribed in ink on paper covering back of frame: ‘Presented to the Honble Archibald Seton, Governor &ca Prince of Wales’s Island - By Her Highness the Begum Sombre Zebool Nissa. Crowned by friendship, Join’d by Love. Sirdhana 15th August 1812. Q.A.D.Dxxx.’.
Water-colour on ivory; oval, 85 by 65 mm, in a wooden frame.
