The shrine of Imam Husayn at Karbala, Iraq. Artist(s): Muhammad Yusuf (fl.c.1845-1875)
- Scope & Content:
-
The shrine of Imam Husayn at Karbala, Iraq.
By the Delhi artist Muhammad Yusuf, 1875.
Inscribed above in nasta‘liq: ‘naqsh-i rauza imam husayn’; and below: ‘‘amal-i muhammad yusuf dihlavi san 92.’.
Water-colour heightened with gold; 396 by 554 mm, including black painted frame.
Purchased 1987.
Note: One of the great Shia shrines, it marks the grave of the decapitated body of the third Imam, Husayn ibn ‘Ali, the grandson of the prophet, who was killed at Karbala in AD 680. The artist has removed the main wall of the shrine so that we see within the central domed chanber the sarcophagus of the Imam, covered with silver, and that of his son ‘Ali Akbar at its foot. The present shrine is of Safavid type, with Ottoman minarets. The layout of the present picture, with title above and attribution below (albeit in this case fixed to the original backing sheet rather than the same paper as the painting) recalls this artist’s other work in the collection Add.Or.4308, done about 1845. The inscription refers to the Hijri year [12]92, equivalent to 1875.
