The Ramlila spectacle at Benares

The Ramlila spectacle, with Laksmana attacking a gigantic Ravana, monkeys and bears fighting the demons, and Rama and the monkey and bear chiefs directing operations, before a large audience including Bengal Army sepoys.
By a Patna/Benares artist, c.1830-40.
Body-colour on mica; 210 by 255 mm.
Purchased 1989.
Note: Linked in brilliance of execution to the three paintings on mica from the James Blunt collection of c.1800 (Add.Or.584-586), this Ramlila is datable somewhat later through the uniforms of the sepoys, with post-1827 shakos. The dramatic action has spilled over into the crowd, as if the latter was witness to the actual battle.
