Six Sufi saints seated on a terrace: Khvaja Mu‘in al-Din; Ghaus al-A‘zam; Khvaja Qutb al-Din; Shaikh Mihr; Shah Sharaf Bu ‘Ali Qalandar; Sultan Musa Shaikh
- Scope & Content:
-
Six Sufi saints seated on a terrace.
By a Rajasthani (Kishangarh?) artist, c.1760.
Inscribed with the names of the saints in Persian: ‘Khvaja Mu‘in al-Din; Ghaus al-A‘zam; Khvaja Qutb al-Din; Shaykh Mihr; Shah Sharaf Bu ‘Ali Qalandar; Sultan Musa Shaykh;’ and in Hindi: ‘Chvaje Mainuldin; Gosal Ajam; Chvaje Kutabudin; Sekhmihar; Syah Saraph Bu Ali Kalamdar; Sultan Musayakh’.
Opaque water-colour and gold; 215 by 170 mm; laid down on a blue album page (on which the inscriptions are written) 28.5 by 22 cm.
Purchased 1989.
Note: Khvaja Mu‘in al-Din Chishti of Ajmer (1142-1236) and Ghaus al-A‘zam of Baghdad (1078-1166) are shown nimbate seated on a pink rug in the most prominent positions on the terrace. Behind on the former’s side are Qutb al-Din (Qutb Saheb) of Mehrauli (d.1236) and one Shaykh Mihr. This latter person is unknown, but even though Mihr is repeated in Persian and Hindi, this may be a mistake for Hazrat Shaykh Mir, Miyanmir, the great saint of Lahore (traditional dates 1531-1644) - he appears to be wearing 17th century Indian costume. On Ghau al-A‘zam’s side are Shaykh Bu ‘Ali Qalandar (Sharaf al-Din) of Panipat (d.1323-4, or 1324-5), and Sultan al-Mushaikh, better known as Nizam al-Din Auliya of Delhi (1236-1325). Beyond the terrace is a lake with towns on the far shore and a European vessel on the water, framed by two trees, with a riotously coloured sky above.
