William Fraser (1784-1835)
- Scope & Content:
-
Portrait of William Fraser (1784-1835), half-length, seated in a chair, holding the snake of a hookah in his left hand and a handkerchief in his right.
By a Delhi artist, c.1820-25.
Opaque water-colour with gold, within an oval 105 by 87 mm, within a rectangular frame with gold flowering creepers; and laid down on a gold sprinkled green album page 36.5 by 25 cm. Various effaced inscriptions and a seal in Persian on the reverse suggest the painting was once in a collection in Rajasthan.
Purchased 1989.
Note: Fraser wears an orange gown open at the front and trimmed with fur on edges and shoulders. His whiskers are more fully developed than in his portrait of 1815 (Falk and Archer, ‘India Revealed’, fig.11), but he does not appear so old as in a later portrait of about 1830 (‘ibid.,’ fig.15). Fraser reached Indian in 1802, and after study at the College of Fort William he was appointed Assistant to the Resident at Delhi, Archibald Seton. He remained in Delhi until he was murdered in 1835 (see Add.Or.4656 below).
