View of Pondicherry from the sea, after an original of 1761. Artist(s): Paramananda Tamby (fl. c.1800)
- Scope & Content:
-
View of Pondicherry from the sea. The citadel of Fort St. Louis is conspicuous in the centre, with the Capuchin Church and the Jesuit College, while four ships lie off the coast with ‘masula’ boats going to and from the beach.
By the artist Paramananda Tamby, probably a Tanjore artist working at Madras, c.1800, after an original of 1761.
Inscribed beneath: ‘Tamby Paramananda’; and ‘View of Pondichery From the Sea or East Side taken on the 22nd May 1761’.
Water-colour; 23 by 85 cm; paper watermarked ‘J. Taylor 1798.’.
Purchased 1990.
Note: The French Commander-in-Chief Lt. General le Comte de Lally surrendered Pondicherry to the British forces under Colonel Eyre Coote on 16th January 1761, and the place was, after some acrimony, handed over to the Madras Council under Governor Pigot on 24th January. Pigot at once began the task of demolishing the works and fortifications, and the citadel, but this was not completed until October 1762.
