A chestnut stallion and a black-faced fat-tailed sheep standing in a yard
- Scope & Content:
-
A chestnut stallion and a black-faced fat-tailed sheep standing in a yard.
By a Delhi artist, c.1815-20.
Inscribed below, in ink over an original pencil inscription: ‘Erin go bragh & the Arab sheep Sheelah. The neck too short of the horse.’.
Water-colour; 37 by 52.5 cm, on paper watermarked’ S. &’c.’ Wise, 1813’.
Purchased 1990.
Note: One from a group of three horse paintings (the others are another version of this one, and of a stallion named Huguenot) which have been associated with William Moorcroft, the Superintendent of the Company’s stud at Pusa, Bihar 1808-19 (see Toby Falk, ‘Elephants of Fame and other animals in Indian painting’, Indar Pasricha Fine Arts, London 1987, pp.30-31). However, neither name Erin-go-Bragh nor Huguenot appear in the lists of stallions recorded in the extensive records (Board’s Collections, IOR F/4/543-4) for 1815-16 of the three stud farms in the lower provinces under Moorcroft’s direction (at Pusa, Ghazipur, and the ‘Zamindari’ stud), nor is there any mention of sheep being bred at these farms, although wild asses from Arabia were. The style of the paintings accords more with that of Delhi than of Patna.
