A drawing composed of different Indian types based on the work of François Baltazard Solvyns
- Scope & Content:
-
A drawing composed of different Indian types based on the work of François Baltazard Solvyns. Three musicians and six servant-types in a large Calcutta room. Through a doorway we can see into a bedroom beyond, containing a four-poster bed with muslin furnishings.
Water-colour and body-colour; 427 by 603 mm.
Purchased 1992.
Note: During the 1790s, Solvyns worked on preparing for publication his ‘A Collection of Two Hundred and Fifty Coloured Etchings descriptive of the Manners, Customs and Dresses of the Hindoos’, which was finally published in Calcutta by 1799. The figures in both this composition and in Add.Or.4307 are taken from this work, but in mirror-reverse to the etchings, suggesting that the artist, doubless one of Solvyns’ assistants, had access to the original drawings. The three musicians are taken from Section 11, and the servants are from Section 2.
