In a Chinese tea-warehouse
- Scope & Content:
-
In a large warehouse, Chinese porters are carrying cylindrical baskets of tea from a store-room on the left and emptying the contents on to a great heap on the right. The tea is being examined by three Europeans, their hair covered by white cloths, while another talks to a Chinese overseer. Along the bottom are two rows of tea-chests, while in the background other chests are being prepared for the packing of the tea for shipping to Europe.
By a Canton artist c.1790.
Opaque water-colour on paper; 18 by 26 ins.
Purchased 1992.
Note: The painting is noteworthy for its subdued use of colour (mostly blues and browns) and for its interesting perspective and use of lighting. The foreground is dark, as it is inside the warehouse, but the background (the chests being prepared in the central courtyard) is brightly lit. A fairly early date for this type of work is suggested by the individualities of facial modelling and architecural detail, as well as by the queue of the foremost European, which hangs down from underneath his cap.
