- Scope & Content:
-
A standing Common Crane (‘Grus Grus’) facing right.
By a Calcutta artist, c.1800.
Inscribed on front in ink in Urdu ‘kulang,’ transcribed ‘koolung’; and in pencil: ‘ardea Grus I.O.G. 674. The crane Gin-lyn v.50 slight Variety.’ Also ‘19’ in top right hand corner.

Provenance: From the collections of George Annesley, Lord Valentia, afterwards Earl Mountnorris, acquired in Calcutta 1803.
Purchased 1994.
Published: Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox, ‘Indian Painting for British Patrons 1770-1860,’ London 1991(no.12).
Note: For other natural history drawings from Valentia’s collection, see Welch 1976 no.26 and 1978, nos.18a-c; Leach 1995, 760-2; and Sotheby’s 10th April 1989 lots 5-21. Valentia (1809) often refers to the plants of India in knowledgeable terms, and reports glowingly on the Botanic Garden at Sibpur under Dr. Roxburgh, but makes no mention of commissioning natural history drawings or being presented with them in Calcutta, although he was presented with some by Dr.Heyne at Bangalore in 1804. Two drawings with Valentia’s Persian seal appear in the Wellesley Collection.
