A view of the Qutb Minar from the east, also showing the Alai Darwaza and Major Robert Smith’s re-sited cupola, with the tomb of Adham Khan and the screen of the mosque in the distance.
By the Delhi artist, Ismail Khan, 1860-65.
Engraved on a gilt strip inside frame: ‘The Khutub Minar Delhi. Ismail Khan. Royal Painter.’ With an accompanying letter dated 21st September 1881, on the occasion of the gift of the painting to Arthur Tite by the original purchaser D.A. Traill Christie.
Water-colour on ivory: oval, 175 by 140 mm, within a gilt frame, and framed in a velvet-lined case (presumably the original mentioned by Christie) 34 by 30 cm.
Purchased 1994.
Note: Ismail Khan was one of the famous artists of Delhi in the second half of the 19th century, being often referred to by visitors.
