Head and shoulders portrait of Captain James Manson (1791-1862), Bengal Army 1808-59, facing to the proper left. His uniform coat has yellow facings and silver lace, with loops and no buttons. c.1825.
Inscribed on the back: ‘My grandfather General James Manson the sixth child of Thomas & Susannah Blake Manson, born at Lambeth 16th July 1791, married Henrietta Suft 28th April 1819. Served in the Bengal Light Infantry; was in charge of Barje Rao, the last of the Peshwas, at the Residency, Bithoor, where many of his seven children were born, retired in 1857 before the Mutiny, died at Westbourne Sq. London 1862. He came to England once during his long service, after 25 years, to buy himself a wig, having lost his hair by a fever. His youngest son Walter was my father. J.A.P. Manson.’
