The Gayatri verse, represented by a cow under a mango tree.
By a Gujarati? artist, mid-19th century.
Inscribed on the front with the ‘Gayatri’ verse in Sanskrit: ‘om ... tat savitur varenyam...et’c.; ‘Gayatri’ in pencil; and 4 numerical diagrams. On the reverse: ‘Gayatri etc. J. Burgess.’
Red and black ink and water-colour; 46.5 by 53 cm.
With an accompanying sheet with part of a town-plan, inscribed in nagari: ‘....6; jhalapatra ka samkaj? .... property’, and with Urdu inscriptions on the reverse identifying the properties. Along with two small accompanying sheets containing a Newari inscription dated Nepal Samvat 790 [AD 1669-70] and a Nagari transliteration.
