Maharaja Narain Singh of Benares (reg. 1795-1835)
- Scope & Content:
-
Maharaja Udit Narain Singh of Benares (reg. 1795-1835), son of Raja Balwant Singh. He sits among cushions, a hookah snake in his hand, and a distinctively wide turban on his head, in three-quarter view, looking out at the viewer.
By a Patna artist, 1818-19.
Inscribed above in Persian: ‘maharaja udit narain singh bahadur 1234’
Pencil, pen-and-ink, and water-colour; 34.4 by 24.7 cm.
Purchased 2002.
Note: The Maharaja’s powers under the new dispensation were curtailed to little more than those of a district collector. He was succeeded by his adopted son, Iswari Prasad Narayan Singh. This drawing is possibly by one of the Indian artists afterwards employed by Charles D’Oyly (Shiv Dayal or Jay Ram Das). A lithographed version appears in the D’Oyly scrapbook compiled by James Munro Macnabb (P2481, folio 60), but in mirror reverse, and without any imprint details. A fully painted version appeared at Christie’s South Kensington, ‘Indian and Islamic Works of Art’, 2 May 2003, lot 65.
