Divinities being worshipped by the Hara clans.
By a Rajasthan/Kotah artist, c.1800.
Brush drawing with watercolour; 241 by 174 mm.
Purchased 2002.
Note: The deities on the left side are perhaps meant to be the triad of Krishna as Brijrajji, with two gopis, which are peculiarly associated with the Raos of Kotah, but the artist has represented instead the Puri Jagannath trio of Jagannatha and Balabhadra on either side of Subhadra. The stumps of the first two have been converted into upraised arms, and the images are more naturalistic than was ever the case with the Puri paintings on which these are based. Subhadra has developed womanly curves to her stump. The deities on the right comprise Siva with Parvati (and their vehicles of a lion and a bull) and Ram with Sita, and Laksmana and Hanuman. The implements for worship lie in front of them. The eight worshippers are perhaps intended as portraits of Raos of Kotah and Bundi, although precise identification is impossible. The group on the right could equally well be ministers or nobles of the Kotah kingdom, where many continued to wear the characteristic turban upturned at the back associated with the Raos of Bundi.
