Page from a dispersed Rasamanjari depicting the heroine Anusayana 2.
- Scope & Content:
-
A page from a ‘Rasamañjari’, showing the second Anuśāyanā heroine, who is sad on account of the hot weather putting an end to her normal trysting place with her lover in a charming grove full of young leaves and birds and peacocks. Her friend advises her to meet her lover in his house instead. She sits in a pavilion on the left talking to her confidante. The latter is gesticulating towards her lover who stands expectantly at the gateway to his house. Beyond a landscape with flowering trees and the peacocks and pigeons mentioned in the text.
By a Mewar artist with strong Malwa links, c. 1620-25.
Inscribed in top margin: ‘bhāvisthānābhāvaśankitā anuśāyānā / dvitīyā 2’ and ‘anuśāyānā 2’ above heroine. Verse 28 of Bhanudatta’s ‘Rasamañjari’ is written in the yellow text panel (see M.S. Randhawa and S.D. Bhambri, ‘Basohli Paintings of the Rasamanjari’, New Delhi, 1981, p. 36).
Opaque watercolour and gold; painting 285 by 160 mm, with yellow text panel above; page including outer red margin 250 by 190 mm. The page has been laid down (comparatively recently) on an unrelated page from a manuscript.
Other pages: The known pages are scattered in various Indian (mostly National Museum, New Delhi), European and American collections. See A. Topsfield, ‘Court Painting at Udaipur’, Zurich, 2002, pp. 57-58 and 80.
Note: the series is a problematic one intermediate between Malwa (architectural panels with arabesques) and Mewar (figural types). This particular page also has strong Sultanate architectural links: both pavilion and gateway carry striped domes, at a time before such structures were built in Udaipur. Topsfield argues for an Udaipur provenance and the patronage of Rana Karan Singh (1620-28).
