Portrait of the Emperor Jahangir with female attendants. Artist(s): Sahib Din (fl.1628-53), follower of
- Scope & Content:
-
Portrait of the Emperor Jahangir with three female attendants, two behind him hold a fly-whisk and a wrapped sword, the third in front offers him a flower. He is seated on a dais in ‘ardha-paryā?kāsana,’ his right foot on a low stool, and holds out his hands to receive the flower.
By a follower of the Mewar artist Sahib Din, c. 1630-40.
Inscribed in left margin: ‘105’; and on the verso in various ‘nāgarī’ hands: ‘pātsā babar dalī kau pātsā; pātsā babar dalī ko aur jod bībī; pātsā akbar aur jod bībī.’
Opaque watercolour and gold; painting199 by 130 mm; page 230 by 150 mm.
Private collection of Indar Pasricha. Purchased January 2005.
Published: ‘Paintings from the Rajput Court’, Indar Pasricha Fine Arts, London, 1986. no. 3, pp. 9-10.
The painting seems a copy by a follower of Sahib Din, with a very distinctive line in backward leaning female figures, of a painting formerly in the Kumar Sangram Singh collection (repro. A. Topsfield, ‘Court painting at Udaipur’, Zurich, 2002, p. 109). Both are based on a Mughal original portrait of the Emperor of about 1614, when connections were established between Udaipur and Agra with Prince Karan’s enforced visits to Agra after his father’s submission in that year and Shah Jahan’s visits to Udaipur in the 1620s.
