Watercolour on cloth from Central Thailand, 2nd half of the 19th Century.
Along with Add.Or.5582, this painting illustrates scenes from the Vessantara Jakata, set in a typical Thai environment, with palaces, Buddhist temples, forest and a village scene beyond the palace walls.
In this painting Prince Vessantara is leaving his palace and giving away his sacred white elephant to the Brahmins, who he encountered on an excursion with his courtiers.
