Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur riding in a procession atop an elephant
Attributed to Shivalal, Udaipur, 1888-89
Numbered 19/38 on the reverse, with a valuation (Rs. 30) and an inscription: tasabir maharanaji sri 108 sri Fate Singh ji. It is also dated (top right corner), 1945 (samvat).

Maharana Fateh Singh (born 1850, reg. 1884-1921) is featured with a gold and green nimbus riding an elephant in a royal procession in 1888-89. Based on another portrait of Fateh Singh, it is possible that the grey bearded nobleman sitting behind the Maharana is Thakur Manohar Singh (see Topsfield 1990, p. 122). Rows of attendants holding royal regalia, including the umbrella and Mewar’s solar standard, appear alongside armed troops in brightly coloured military dress. Fateh Singh was a rather conservative politician who made every attempt to resist British control; he refused to attend the Delhi Durbars of 1903 and 1911. Ultimately, he was forced by the British to abdicate the throne and relinquish his authority to his only son Bhupal Singh in 1921.
