Sir John Spencer Login (1809-63), of Stromness, Orkney of Scotland, trained at the Royal Infirmary at Edinburgh. He was appointed as the surgeon to the 1st Brigade Horse Artillery under Sir Charles Metcalf in 1831. In 1838, he was transferred to Lucknow, where he was appointed as the Residency Surgeon and Postmaster General. Login married Lena Campbell in 1842 and their children were born in Lucknow. Aside from his Lucknow connections, Login was affiliated to the service of Maharaja Dalip Singh (1837-93, r.1843-49) of the Punjab from 1849-1850s.
