Hilary Mantel (b. 1952). Artist(s): Lord, Nick (b.1988)
- Scope & Content:
-
Hilary Mantel (b. 1952) is the author of the Booker Award-winning trilogy about Thomas Cromwell (c. 1485-1540): Wolf Hall (2009), Bring Up the Bodies (2012) and The Mirror & the Light (2020). She is the first and only living writer to have a portrait displayed at British Library. Both artist and author hoped it would remedy the often ‘passive’ image projected onto women in the public eye. Mantel said in anticipation of it: “so often in history, women have been passive recipients of an artist’s gaze or a camera’s gaze. We are moving into an era where this has to be renegotiated.” Mantel sat for more than 500 photographs which Lord used as aids to create the final painting. Portrait Artist of the Year is a TV competition run by Sky Arts to find talented portraitists; Nick Lord won the first series in 2013.
