William Larkins Bequest, 1800
Literature: H. Ward & W. Roberts, ‘Romney’ (London, 1904) I, 72; II, 173
Larkins paid 140 guineas for the picture. Its identification with a ‘whole-length of Governor Hastings’, painted from sittings on 4 and 9 July, 1795, was made after the discovery of a list of portraits drawn up by the frame-maker, W Saunder. In that list a note was found stating that the picture in question was ‘sent to Mr. Larkins, Blackheath’.
The portrait was hung in the Correspondence Committee Room of East India House together with the portrait of Lord Cornwallis, also bequeathed by Larkins (see F6), and then in the Council Chamber of the India Office.
