Major-General Stringer Lawrence (1697-1775), Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies, 1752-54 and 1761-66. Painted January 1761.
Half-length. He has a short white wig and wears a plain red coat above a steel breast-plate.

Commissioned by the East India Company, 1760
Engraved: R. Houston 1761 and copied by R. Purcell, nd. At India House, Leadenhall Street, this picture hung in a Committee Room on the S.E. side of the Director’s Court Room), and then in the Council Chamber of the India Office.
Reynolds painted two other portraits of Lawrence both for Sir Robert Palk, Governor of Fort St. George, 1763-67; a full-length portrait (see stipple-engraving by E.A. Ezechiel) and another head and shoulders in profile which Curzon presented to the Victoria Memorial Hall.
