Lieutenant-General Sir Eyre Coote, (1726-83), served in India 1754-62, 1769-70, 1777-83, in campaigns against the French and later Haidar ‘Ali. Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies, 1777-83. Painted 1783
A full-length figure, wearing a military coat of red faced with blue, light-coloured waistcoat and breeches, and high military boots with spurs. He wears the star and ribbon of the Bath; and at his side hangs a gold-hilted sword, possibly the one presented to him by the Company in 1764. His left hand, which rests upon a tasselled cane, holds an unfolded despatch; the right is lightly laid upon his hat which is placed upon a table covered with a dark green cloth. On this are piled or spread out several documents. Two curtains are parted to show a stretch of open country in the background.

Cirumstances of acquisition unrecorded. Hung traditionally in the Council Chamber of the India Office.
