- Scope & Content:
-
Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington (1769-1852). Made c.1845
Equestrian statuette. Bareheaded in uniform.
Bronze; 19 ins (48 cms) high
Circumstances of acquisition unrecorded
D’Orsay wrote to Henry Bulwer, March 1845, saying ‘I have just made a statuette of the Duke of Wellington on horseback, which is almost causing a revolution here. The Duke declares it is the finest thing he has ever seen and the only portrait by which he would wish to be known to posterity. He comes here continually to admire himself’. (See Lord G. Wellesley and J. Steegman. ‘The iconography of the First Duke of Wellington’ (London, 1935, 9). It was well known, however, that T.H. Nicholson (?-1870) helped D’Orsay with modelling and this may partly be his work. Nicholson was at first a modeller and became particularly skilled in modelling horses. He exhibited at the R.A. 1838-43. After D’Orsay’s death Nicholson claimed that he did all the work and the Count took all the credit.
