Presented by Herbert Compton, 1900
For Eastwick’s adventurous career, see H. Compton, ‘A master mariner’ (London, 1891). He served in all parts of the East, from the Persian Gulf to Australia, and voyaged also to the West Indies and South America. Three times he was shipwrecked; twice he lost the whole of his fortune; twice he was taken prisoner after a severe fight, in the first case with a French frigate and in the second with an American privateer. He died at the age of ninety-three, having been totally blind for the last thirty-three years of his life. He was father of Captain W.J. Eastwick (see F42) and of the Persian scholar E.B. Eastwick, C.B., M.P. (1814-83). The latter served with the Bombay Native Infantry 1836-42, and became Professor of Oriental Languages and Librarian at Haileybury 1845-58; Assistant Political Secretary 1859-60; Private Secretary to the Secretary of State 1866-67 and Member of Parliament 1868-74.
