In the foreground is the river Ganges with steps leading up to the palace of Raja Abal. Behind appear the domes and minarets of the mosque erected by Aurangzeb on the site of a Hindu temple.

This was one of the paintings made for Warren Hastings from sketches taken during their visit to Benares in 1781. It was sold with ten others when Hastings gave up his Park Lane house, the eleven realising only £125.
