Purchased March 1913
Heber was ordained in 1807 and after holding the living of Hodnet and being Prebendary of St. Asaph, went to Calcutta as Bishop in 1822. He completed Bishop’s College, Calcutta and toured through the whole of India and Ceylon, recording his impressions in a journal which was published by his widow under the title ‘A journey through India from Calcutta to Bombay’ etc, (London, 1828). This picture is a smaller version of, perhaps a modello for, the portrait at All Souls College, Oxford, from which a number of engravings were made, e.g., engraving by Samuel Cousins, 1830, frontispiece to A. Heber, ‘The life of Reginald Heber, DD’ (London, 1830).
