Hasan Reza Khan, minister to Asaf al-Daula, 1784
Seated on a sofa with his right hand on a sword and his left holding the stem of a hookah with a crystal mouthpiece and decorated with tinsel and appliqué velvet. The red turban is plain and the dress is of white muslim ornamented with jewelled armlets, a green and gold crossbelt and a pink and silver brocade sash. Buildings are seen through an open window in the background.
Inscribed on note on back of canvas: ‘Joh Zophany painted this picture at Lucknow, A.D. 1784, by desire of Hussain Reza Caun, Nabob Suffraz Ul Dowlah, who gave it to his friend Francis Baladon Thomas’

Nawab Hasan Reza Khan became Chief Minister to Asaf al-Daula at an early period in his reign. According to Ghulam Husain Khan, the author of the ‘Seir Mutaqherin’ (trans. Calcutta, 1902-3), iv, 100, he had originally been Superintendent of Shuja‘ al-Daula’s Kitchen Office and Audience Chamber; W Tennant, ‘Indian recreations’ (London 1804-8), ii, 409, speaks of him as very popular, but mentions an attempt to assassinate him. He appears in Zoffany’s painting of ‘Colonel Mordaunt’s Cock Match’. The frame is similar to F106.
