Presented to the Company’s Military Seminary at Addiscombe by Henry Wood, B.C.S., May 1852 and transferred to the India Office in 1862.
Nott and Pollock (see F139) became popular heroes as a result of their march to Kabul after the disasters in Afghanistan, 1841-42. Pollock started to march from Peshawar and after relieving Sale at Jalalabad, reached the capital in September, 1842; there he was joined a few days later by Nott, who had marched from Kandahar. The prisoners taken by the Afghans were recovered, the bazaar of Kabul was blown up, and then the troops withdrew.
Nott was soon after appointed envoy to the King of Oudh, but ill-health compelled him to quit India towards the end of 1843. G.C.B., 1843.
