Pollock commanded the expedition to relieve Sale at Jalalabad in 1842 after the Afghanistan disasters of 1841-42. He forced the Khyber Pass and relieved Sale on April 16. He was then allowed to retire at his own discretion. He marched via Kabul where Nott joined him in September. The prisoners were recovered and the Kabul bazaar blown up (see F137). After his return Pollock was given command of a division. In 1843 he became Acting Resident of Lucknow and from 1844-47 was Military Member of the Supreme Council. He resigned in 1854 and became Government Director of the East India Company.
The Company commissioned this picture as a companion portrait to that of Nott for Addiscombe. ‘Resolved Unanimously that, being desirous to place in the Hall at Addiscombe a companion portrait to that of the late Maj.-General Sir William Nott, K.C.B., and being of opinion that the eminent services and distinguished character of Lieut.-General Sir George Pollock G.C.B., specially entitle him to be selected for this mark of honourable distinction, and to be recognised as an example for the imitation of every officer entering the Army, Sir George Pollock be requested to sit for the purpose, and that the Chairman and Deputy Chairman be authorised to take measures accordingly, subject to the approval of the Board of Commissioners for the affairs of India.’ Court Minutes, 23 January, 1856.
